Our school is named after a heroic young man.
Richard, or Richie as his family called him, was born May 20, 1975, in Las Vegas, NV.
Richie went bowling every week with his family and spent his weekly allowance on sport pennants and Hardy Boys books. Richie was an avid sports fan and had thirty-one pennants hung up neatly around his bedroom. He also collected sports shirts that he treasured. One of his favorite things to do was take a road trip with his dad to Phoenix to watch basketball games and to San Diego to see baseball games.
Richie was a straight-A student. His principal call him "almost perfect".
Richie had fought with childhood diabetes his entire life. Although he struggled with the disease, he was still active in sports and school.
On March 30, 1987, Richie was struck and killed by a drunk driver while waiting for his school bus to take him to school. He died a hero, pushing his friend and classmate to safety and preventing the car from striking both boys.
Although Richie's life was too short, it was meaningful and he loved life. His memory will live on through the amazing students that have the opportunity to attend our beautiful school named in his honor.
